Many students want to study at university. They need to get an excellent result in Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination to get an academic degree at those universities. These days it has a hot issue about the undergraduate program. Some of them would choose 3 years undergraduate program when the others support the 4 years undergraduate program. In my point of view, 4years undergraduate program is more suitable for the students to study at university. One of the reasons choosing the 4 years program is that it has better opportunities for learning the knowledge. In the 3 years program, students needed to follow the tight schedule to study different subjects. This intensive method may let students to learn the knowledge poorly because they need to revise all the subjects in a short period of time. When the program changes to 4 years, students will have a loose schedule of timetable during these 4 years. Students can absorb the knowledge easily using a longer time to study. It can also let students to attend more courses to study because of the longer program. Besides having better opportunities to learn more knowledge, students can have more chance to learn different useful skills in the society, such as social skills, interpersonal skills, teamwork etc. At the universities, we would have many chances to organize different activities. During those organizations, they would have different problems to happen. This is the time that we learn how to handle these problems. We can learn some skills after solving these problems. It would be useful when we work in the society. Studying 4years undergraduate program can let us have more time to train us to organize the activities well. It is beneficial for us to work in the future. New Academic Structure "334" will be launched 2 years later. Students can study 4 years undergraduate program after studying in secondary school. I hope this new academic structure can help students to develop in different aspect well. Hong Kong will become well-developed because it has many talents under this new measure.
In respond to a 3-year or 4-year undergraduate program at university, I prefer to 3-year.
To begin with, 3-year enable students can enter society and work early so they can accumulate working experience. As everyone knows, our society, Hong Kong, is keen on competition. Not only is the high education level needed, but also the working experience is essential. For most of professional such as Accountant, experience to them is really crucial. After the minimum year i.e. three year to pass the examination in Account, one has to work for three to five year by accumulating working experience in order to be an accountant. Therefore, 3-year is good for students.
Some may argue that 4-year enable students enjoy the school life because homework and courses can be amortized over the four years. I think it implies that possibility that students are not willing to graduate from the University for fear of entering the society. None have ever said Life is easy. So is study. Students cannot necessarily enjoy school life but they must study as study is the first priority. 3-year is tend to concentrate on the courses needed to be finished within shorter period of time relating to 4-year. Thus, students can spend less time and learn the most knowledge from the courses which is our goal for studying at the university.
Besides from these, 3-year is more affordable for students whose family is low-income group than 4-year. In Hong Kong, the average tuition fee of university is about $50,000. If the undergraduate program prolong from three to four year, it is a quite heavy burden to their family. Moreover, some who really cannot afford may discontinue their schooling. It is a pity that capable people do not study as a result of shortage of money. Obviously, no matter for any students, 3-year undergraduate program is more affordable for them.
For the above reasons, therefore, I prefer to 3-year undergraduate program at university.
In Hong Kong, all the universities were practicing 3 – year undergraduate program. However, some people argue that they should imitate the foreign schools and suggest that practicing 4 - year undergraduate program is better. In fact, I think that 4 year system is more preferable because of the following reasons. To begin with, 4 – year program could relax the hectic teaching schedule. Generally, for the sake of getting a favorable result in examination, students may spend most of the time in studying or preparing various projects. It seems that these students are studied under the pressure, but not enjoying the campus life. If one more year is given, these students can balance the time of studying and relaxing. I am sure that revising with sufficient time and optimistic sentiment, the final result would be improved. Another reason for supporting 4 – year undergraduate program is that student can have more chance to participate different activities which only appeared in school life. They can make use the spare time to build up or strengthen their skills and ability via joining the student exchange program, practical training or any other team works. As university is nearly the final stage of learning, students should be more competitive before entering the social market. Thus, time is needed for them to gain ground. In conclusion, I was strongly support 4 – year undergraduate program rather than 3 – year one since students can have a well and relaxed learning under a loose schedule. And also cultivate more people in a bid to be a sociable and communicative person before graduating. I am sure that it brings benefit to the future career.
When asked about the issue about whether prefer a 3-year or 4-year undergraduate program, people have different opinions, some may argue that 4-year program is more suitable for the students because of the following reasons.
As 3-year undergraudate program have a tight schedule and students might only concentrate on their homework, project and the theis which mainly affect the academic results but not enjoying the University learning program that can enrich their knowledge, interpersonal relationship etc. However, in my opinion, the 3-year program is benefit to the students, although the schedule of the 3-year program is compact than 4-year’s, but it can train the students’ time management. Most of the students in the University would join the extra-curricular activity and participate in different events such as debate competiton, foreign exchange program etc.The students should have a good time management so that can keep the balance between the academic and their relish.
Financially, the 4-year program would aggravate the burden of the family. The tutition fee of one academic year of the University is around 40thousand a year. The total payment is about 16thoudsand but the 3-year program is only 12thousand.It is much cheaper than 4-year program. Also the 4-year program need much more reference, notes etc.The low income family might found difficult in paying those expenses. Thus , 3-year program is more affordable for the family.
To conclude, I preger the 3-year undergraduate program as the students not only focus on studying but also learn to have a good time management and it is boon for the family.
3-3-4 education model will be introduced a few years later. In my opinion, this new model will bring a lot of benefits to students. In the followings, I will analyze the benefits of this new education model.
To begin with, the first benefit is that they may have less pressure. Under the new model, the HKCEE and HKALE will be combined into one public examination. It is generally agree that the exanimation pressure in Hong Kong is extremely high, many students prefer to face one public examination rather than two. So, students can alleviate their pressure deeply.
The second benefit is that students will have one more year to study in university. Actually, three – year university programs are too short. The schedule and courses are too tight to follow. However, there are a lot of extra-curricular activities for students to join. With limit time, student cannot join activities wholeheartedly when 3-year model is used. Moreover, students can join some exchange program in a year if 3-3-4 is practiced. For example, the business subject students may have an opportunity to join the exchange program in USA. Throughout this great experience, students possess a great chance to learn and experience such as proficiency in English, better interpersonal skills. That is to say, students can develop the potential better.
Besides, university students can have more time to choose their in-depth studies. Having just one year to consider, their decision may be hasty and wrong. The 3-3-4 allows students have one more year to consider. By studying one more year, students will better understand their own interest and ability and therefore are able to have a more sensible decision.
On the whole, I strongly prefer that 3-3-4 education model should be adopted. I am confident that the benefits are foreseeable in the future.
In Hong Kong, got a good result in AL examination and study in university is not an easy task. In order to have a better life in the future, study for an undergraduate program is a must. In my opinion, I prefer a 3-year undergraduate program based on three reasons.
First, a 3-year undergraduate program can save the tuition fee and ease the burden of my parents. Also, I can save the money on buying learning materials such as reference books or computer software and use the amount of money to join a trip, rather than joining the exchange program. Go for a trip can Borden my horizon and gain a lot more experience absorbed from other countries including the custom, tradition, religious etc. I think this is an indirect way to know with people with different nationality, also improve my language, communication skills and increase my confidence too.
Second, a 3-year undergraduate program can save 1 year. I can use this year for my further study or work in the society. Get more working experience is advantageous to me because the actual working experience is rather important than just sit in the lecture theatre and learn the professional knowledge. Save 1 year can help me to obtain an employment easier because work in a real place can gain specific knowledge and technique for my future occupation.
Third, students who study a 4-year undergraduate program have to bear more pressure, they may not have motivation for studying in university for 4-year because the school life maybe bored and monotonous to them. They may want to get into the society earlier and earn a stable income for their family or self-use rather than go to school everyday. Work in the society and get along with the others is more attractive than having lessons in university, this kind of school life is very systematical.
All in all, study for a 3-year undergraduate program is beneficial to us. Not only save our time and money, we can earn job experience and build up our social network, also save the money and go for a trip to see more around the world.
When it comes to issue about whether a 3 or 4 year undergraduate program is perferred. Many people, especially students, will perfer a 4 undergraduate program. In my opinion, a 4 year undergraduate program will be more appropriate suitable for university students. Here are some reasons:
Financially, students do not need to worry about tuition fees since Hong Kong government has been offering low-interest loan for many years to students in need. However, students who are well-performed can obtain scholarship from university.
Academically, students can improve their schoolwork and brush up their Enghish since more time is given and all the things including schoolwork and homework will be well-organized. University students always under great pressure because of hectic schedule. a 4 year undergraduate program can relieve this problem since studying time is lengthened.
Mentally, students may think stay one more year in university can acquire more knowledge and become more skillful as further social and interpersonal skill are taught. In fact, student under a 4 year undergraduate program can join more activities or Unions as time can be slow down, their social and interpersonal skill can be enhanced obviously.
In the view of universities,a stronger sense of belonging can be developed.Students stay one more year in university and more sense of belonging can be developed through organizing activities, joining exchange programs or other functions.
University, is the place which extremely important for us to study. Universities train our social skills, interposal skills, team work, and how to work under pressure. Those personal growths can make us become mature enough to enter the society. There are 2 undergraduates programmed at university, one is 3-year, the other one is 4-year. In my opinion, I prefer having the 4-year undergraduates program.
First of all, apart from the academic knowledge, study in universities is a good chance for us to get something about learning experience. There are lots of exchanges programs offer by universities. During the extra year, we could travel to other foreign countries and study for a long period of time. We need to communicate with foreigners by using English and it provides a great opportunity for us to improve our English. We can improve our communication skills and presentation skills when we having the study program at that foreign university. Also, we could get different travel experiences through the exchange programs and widen our field of view. Learn about the culture of different countries, having a great travel period with our friends and learning while relaxing.
Secondly, in that extra year, we could also in Hong Kong to do some services for our society after having the exchange program. The voluntary social works are the most meaningful work we could do. We could understand the social phenomenon during visiting the Older House, helping the older who live alone to clean their houses; visiting the people who live under poverty line or the orphan. To give is more meaningful than to take. We could gain happiness through the voluntary social works.
Last but not least, there are many practice programs operated by the universities and some companies. It provides a chance for us to do some practices on the job which we will choose in the future. We could get the working experiences through those programs and it increases the chance of obtain an employment after graduated.
In the conclusion, having a 4-years undergraduates program at universities provide an extra year for us to get more learning and working experiences, relax under the academic pressure, widen our field of view and do some meaningful services for our society. Therefore, I prefer to take a 4-year undergraduate program at university.
Some people have suspicions on the new 4-year undergraduate programme. Undoubtedly, it is good for students. In view of personal development, the new plan allows students to study liberal studies in the first year of university life. Various subjects - history, business, biology, etc. are included in the curriculum of liberal studies. Like the one in USA, the university students have a better chance to find out their interest and talent from the actual experience. To explore our privilege, study one more year is worthwhile. Unlike the 3-year programme course, students must choose particular subjects they want to study before form 4. Most schools offer 3 streams to students, which are art, commerce or science. Some even provide less than 3 streams. The scale of freedom to change someone’s learning scope is not that easy. In this old system, we have to bear a heavy risk if we have chosen an improper decisions.
In view of school life, the new 4-year scheme indeed benefits the post-secondary students. The schedule of courses will not be too tight and too tough. More time is provided to the university learner, so that they could join more activities and enjoy their school life longer. The academic pressure must be great reduced ! Considering the old system one, students sometimes in a dilemma, whether they join an exchange programme , spend more time in student association or only focus on their work. Sacrificing but no choice!
People argue that the tuition hand in to the new college system maybe more expensive than the former one. However, it is not true actually. Grant and scholarship are distributed by the government or other organizations, like the Jockey Club. Even if you borrow the tuition from the government, the interest rate is absolutely low. Returning a few fees to the SAR every month after finishing the study is not a problem for the graduates. The fee will certainly not be a burden although 4 years we have to pay.
Despite of the advantages mentioned above, I would like to choose the 3-year one. Being a student who has already studied in the old curriculum for more than ten years, I really can’t take the risk to change my studying mode suddenly. The standard for students in the new scheme is totally different. I’m not sure I can familiar with it immediately. Because of laziness, I don’t have intensive to face this great challenge!
Undergraduate education is an education level taken prior to gaining a first degree (except for an associate's degree), hence in many subjects in many educational systems, undergraduate education is post-secondary education up to the level of a bachelor's degree, such as in the United States, where a university entry level is known as undergraduate, while students of higher degrees are known as graduates, while in some other educational systems and subjects, undergraduate education is post-secondary education up to the level of a master's degree, for example some science and engineering courses in Britain or some medicine courses in Europe. For the current education system (3-4-3) in Hong Kong, all universities adopt the 3-year undergraduate program. However, some parents argue that the new education model (3-3-4) is suitable for their children, which means they support universities to carry out the 4-year undergraduate program. It is because the parents think that their children should learn more job –related knowledge before working in society. In my point of view, in the aspect of ‘time and money used’, ‘their ways of thinking’ and ‘experience gained’, the 3-year undergraduate program is appropriate for students in Hong Kong. Firstly, in the aspect of the ‘time and money used’, each student need to pay about forty thousand dollar for the tuition fee every year. If they join a 4-year undergraduate program, they need to spend more money. Besides, they need to spend one more year for studying instead of working and earning money. Therefore, joining a 3-year undergraduate program can assist Hong Kong student to save money and time, as well as allow them to work in society early. Secondly, in the aspect of ‘their ways of thinking’, if students are able to work in society early, they can meet different walls of people. Through the process of communicating with other people, their thinking ways will become mature and all-round. Apart from this, their interpersonal relationships and communication skills will be greatly improved as they are not just sitting in the class and listening to professors. Thus, a 3-year undergraduate program gives opportunities to students to improve their communication skills and interpersonal relationships through working in real society. Last, in the aspect of ‘experience gained’, joining 3-year undergraduate program which allows students to work in real society early, they are able to gain more experience. They can practice the theories that they learned in campus when they work. Moreover, their problem-solving skills can be improved when they meet and handle some difficulties. Thus, a 3-year undergraduate program can help increasing their experience. In conclusion, I prefer 3-year undergraduate program for three main reasons: it can save money and time, it can make students mature and help students gaining experience.
Studying in university is always the aim of most of students. If one day I can achieve this aim, I would prefer a 4-year undergraduate program. Firstly, I think that studying in university is actually similar to living in the social environment. In the university, students are able to study in a more relaxed mode and enjoy more freedom. For example, students are able to enjoy the democratic rights, they can reflect their ideas or opinion to the school more freely (Of cause radical methods should be encouraged.). Therefore, studying in university for a longer time enables us to prepare well for working in the sociality in the future. Secondly, there are more chances for us to experience more. In the university, there are always much more extracurricular activities, such as different clubs and exchange programs. That means students may get more chances to experience more through those activities. For example, student joining the exchange program can visit overseas countries for experiencing the local culture and also making more friends. A 4-year undergraduate program could give students more time to gain treaurable experience from those extracurricular activities. Thirdly, students can study in a more efficient way. 4-year undergraduate program enable students to have 1 more year time learning in the university. Students can thus study in the university in a relaxed learning environment. Without heavy stress, students could learn efficiently. Hence, a 4-year undergraduate program should be adopted. All in all, a 4-year undergraduate program benefits to students’ learning.
For the 3-year undergraduate program, many people think that it is a harder studying program rather than the 4-year undergraduate program. They think the curriculum 4-year undergraduate program is simplier and only one public exam. However, there are a lot of benefits that 3-year undergraduate program can enjoy and none of the 4-year undergraduate program. First of all, money is saved if studying under 3-year undergraduate program. The fee of studying in university is very expensive. And we have to pay for it each year.In the other words, the 3-year undergraduate program can help us to save the money of 1 year university fee.It is a important reason that 3-year undergraduate program is more prefer for many poorer family. Also,3 year studying in university is enough.4 year of it can just say as waste of time.Actually,we get lots of knowledges in our secondary school and we select subjects according our own preference. In the university,of course, lessons can deeper our knowledge. But we may feel boring as we learn a lots already.3-year is really sufficient. Moreover, there are more 'competitors' under 4-year undergraduate program, pressure is heavy.3-year undergraduate program has 'clear' lots of weaker students in the first public exam.Number of students in F7 is fewer, fewer student to compete with you at the same time.Pressure can relatively release. All in all,3-year undergraduate program can help save money and time which are precious and it is not essential to use and waste for 1 more year.Pressure is lesser that fewer people to compete for.Theregore,I will totally support the 3-year undergraduate program.

University life is another kind education, not only can you obtain knowledge of different aspects and enhance your communication skills during those years, you can also meet people form all walks of life. Sometimes, those friends you make may even become your business partners or best friends throughout your life. Not to mention that university life is a break before you deal with the cruel society, therefore one should enjoy and treasure those few years. Hence, in my own opinion I prefer a 4-year undergraduate program. My view will be elaborated in this article.
Why does 4 year undergraduate program exist? What’s the point of studying one more year? Sometimes, you major that you take requires you to do so, take Polytechnic University as an example. In the foundation year i.e. first year of study in the Polytechnic University, the non-local students are required to take up to a maximum of 32 credits, with 14 credits being University compulsory subjects and 18 credits to be prescribed by the programme hosting department*.
In addition to the General Education subjects prescribed by the department in the foundation year, students following a 4-year (foundation year + 3 years) undergraduate curriculum are required to complete two more General Education subjects with one from the category of “China Studies” and one from the category of “Broadening” before graduation*.
Their credit requirement should be the sum of the normal credit requirement of the 3-year degree programme plus 32 credits for the foundation year**.
Other than this, universities in the U.K also adopt such system but for a different reason. The extra year is a free year or a “gap year” for students to explore the world and broaden their horizons. Some may take this as a chance to rest or to go on a trip. My friend used this year to participate in exchange programs and volunteering work. After this year, they continue their studies but with a more mature mind. I really do appreciate this idea because I wish to explore more during those years. I think the four years at university is not another torment of studying, it is a way to enjoy life. Even though the fees maybe more expensive, it is surely worth it.

To most students, university seems to be the perfect final destination of the years of learning after kindergarten, primary school and secondary school.Whether to keep a 3-year undergraduate program or extend the program to 4 years, this has become the issue of concern in Hong Kong. In my opinion, 4-year undergraduate program is more suitable for the students for the following reasons.
To commence with, with a 4-year undergraduate program, students can have more time to study in the universities. The function of universities is to help students preparing themselves to become knowledgeable people so as to lead a decent life. More practically, students would become the future work force in labour market and serve the society in different professions. As they have came to the final stage of learning, say if they would not continue to go for post-graduate program, students should have more time to receive education for longer period and thus eqiup with the knowledge that the society required so that they can be really useful in reality. Therefore, a 4-year undergraduate program is a better choice than 3-year undergraduate program.
Compared 3-year undergraduate program with 4-year undergraduate program, 4-year undergraduate program will allow students to have more relaxing schedules. There are indeed numerous things that students can do in a year time. They can join exchange program to visit other countries for a year, which would boraden their horizons through getting the first hand experiences of culture of foreign countries. Also, students can participate in school activities like Students' Unions and different kinds of committees. Through having such extra-curricular activites, students can learn how to work with others efficiently and harmoniously and cope with problems flexibly. Not only these qualities could not be taught by books and teachers, they are essential for the students to learn the importance of being adaptable and maintaining good relationship with others. In fact, university life should be all about experiences instead of just finishing assignments and reading materials so the extra year added in 4-year undergraduate program is extrermely important to the students.
Some may argue that the new program involves a higher cost of studying but I believe that this problem can be solved if the government and universities continues to provide the current loans and subsidies assistances to those students in needs. It is unjustifiable to conclude that the 4-year undergraduate program will discourage students from poor families to apply for the universities. Nothing can hinder learning.
In conclusion, 4-year undergraduate program should be promoted for the sake of allowing students to learn more relaxingly and become more knowledgable people in the future, which are also the aims of education. In such a konwledge-based era, it has been of paramount importance to ensure students to learn in the most effective way and I believe 4-year undergraduate program will be the best chocie.

School is a means but not learning, the purpose of schooling is to find a good job. Can graduate a year early as a year earlier, it can make money one year earlier. So from the above two points of view, four-year university change to a three-year one may not bad. However, the university four years to three years, the disadvantages are many. First of all, after four years to three, students will inevitably reduce the time and learning content. From the learning content, amounted to a small school for a year, which students learn knowledge, not a good thing. Secondly, quality training point of view, not a good thing. Because the universities are the most precious time of life, knowledge is only one aspect of the enjoyment of college life is an integral part. After four years into three years to learn the knowledge may be accelerated after school hours, but the college life and experience can not be accelerated. Students spend less time one year of university, certainly more regret in later life will be less happy memories.

ReplyDeleteFirst, a 3-year undergraduate program can save the tuition fee and ease the burden of my parents.
ReplyDeleteFinancially, students do not need to worry about tuition fees since Hong Kong government has been offering low-interest loan for many years to students in need.
Above are my views towards this issue.

ReplyDeleteUniversity, is the place which extremely important for us to study.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, apart from the academic knowledge, study in universities is a good chance for us to get something about learning experience.
ReplyDeleteUnlike the 3-year programme course, students must choose particular subjects they want to study before form 4.
ReplyDeleteFor the current education system (3-4-3) in Hong Kong, all universities adopt the 3-year undergraduate program.
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I think that studying in university is actually similar to living in the social environment.
ReplyDeleteHowever, there are a lot of benefits that 3-year undergraduate program can enjoy and none of the 4-year undergraduate program.

ReplyDeleteUniversity life is another kind education, not only can you obtain knowledge of different aspects and enhance your communication skills during those years, you can also meet people form all walks of life.

ReplyDeleteTo most students, university seems to be the perfect final destination of the years of learning after kindergarten, primary school and secondary school.Whether to keep a 3-year undergraduate program or extend the program to 4 years, this has become the issue of concern in Hong Kong.

ReplyDeleteSchool is a means but not learning, the purpose of schooling is to find a good job.
